This book has been compiled keeping in view mainly the practical applications. In most cases, the procedures of the methods of evaluation are described while omitting complicated theory as far as possible. Methods which the author and his colleagues felt would come into general use in the future are described in detail. Methods with which the author has little experience are cited only as literature references.
This English version in the translation of the original Japanese book which was published by the Taisei publishing Company Ltd. in 1982. In writing the original Japanese version of this book, the author received encouragement in different forms from many safety research groups. This includes the help received from the International Group of Experts on the Explosion Risks of Ustable Substances of the Organization for economics Cooperation and Development (OECD-IGU), devoted workers of the Japanese Chemical Industry Association's Research Group for the development of Measures Against Risks from Unstable Substances, the Central Occupational Hazards Prevention Association's Committee for Examination of Safety in Batch Processing and the devoted staff of the relevant group at the Tokyo Fire Kumagai of Japanese Airlines, Mr. Masuno of the ministry of Foreign Affairs, staff of the Switzerland and West Germany, and Members of the E-27 Committee of the American Society for Testingand Materials (ASTM) regarding safety research activities abroad was very valuable.
