Many believe that ISA-88 only applies to automation engineers. This is not true. It actually lays out the design process for recipe-driven manufacturing. While that was the initial focus of the ISA-88 committee, the resultant work has been effectively applied in non-process industries and discrete and continuous processes. The ISA-88 standard can be applied to any process where procedural control is needed. While this is most common in batch processes, it is also used in startup, shutdown, exception handling, and switchovers in all manufacturing processes. The chapters in this book describe projects that converted the ISA concepts into reality.
