This publication presents papers by architects, academics and an estates officer who all have practical experience of commissioning and designing buildings for new and established universities.
The papers arise from a seminar held by the Royal Fine Art Commission to consider best practice in commissioning higher education buildings and briefing architects. Case studies of successful new buildings show how the procurement process can be handled to achieve high quality design, as well as demonstrating that vision and determination on the part of the client can help to bring about good architecture, even when money is tight.
